SMD resistor code calculator

Read the tiny markings on surface-mount resistors. This SMD resistor code calculator decodes 3-digit, 4-digit, R-decimal and EIA-96 codes into ohms.

Tiny surface-mount resistors print 3 or 4 characters. This decodes 3-digit, 4-digit and EIA-96 codes.

Letters are fine: 4R7, 01C, 68X

Coro's tip: Use a magnifier or your phone camera zoom to read SMD codes. Very small parts (0201, 0402) often have no code at all, so keep them in labelled bags.

SMD resistor code calculator: common questions

What does 103 mean on an SMD resistor?

10 × 10³ Ω = 10 kΩ. The last digit is the number of zeros.

How do 4-digit SMD codes work?

Three significant digits and a multiplier: 1002 = 100 × 10² Ω = 10 kΩ. They are used on ±1% parts.

What is an EIA-96 code?

A two-digit number from the E96 table plus a multiplier letter, used on small 1% resistors. 01C = 100 × 100 Ω = 10 kΩ.

For learning and low-voltage hobby circuits (12 V and below). Always check the part's datasheet. Never use these tools to plan mains (230 V) wiring.

EC-01 Basic Electronics teaches all of this on real hardware — from Ohm's law to a soldered 555 flasher.
